Miasma III: Pestilence and Providence

2023

Miasma III proceeds from two considerations: the physical layout of the gallery and the ancient concept of miasma. While a continuous space, the gallery encompasses three implicit divisions, each with a different character. Reflecting this, Miasma III establishes three zones: the front (domestic) space as the realm of the individual; the “portal” as the domain of science and medicine; and the tall skylit expanse as the zone of the cosmos and attendant forces of fate and chance. Like its predecessors, this work traces responses to epidemic disease ranging from ancient Greece to medieval medicine to our ongoing experience of COVID.
